The Genting Group began expanding its operations in the late 80s and early 90s. Its first major expansion was in 1993 when the company launched Star Cruises (which operates in throughout the Asia-Pacific region). In 1996, they entered the oil and gas market in Indonesia, and in 2003, they opened a power plant in India. Today, they also own resorts and casinos throughout the world, as well as Genting International, PLC, an international investment holding company.
The company began its international operations after a major restructuring in 1989. It became a holdings company, and opened divisions abroad. Over the past two decades, Genting’s strategy has been to take its strong international reputation and use it to successfully increase its international presence. Today, most of their operations remain in Southeast Asia, but they also operate in the UK and with an online gambling site.
According to The Star (Malaysia’s largest newspaper), Lim Kok Thay (Chairman) stated: "My father's advice to me is to hold the group steady as she goes, rather than to rush headlong into any wild expansion programme. That's my intention too as we need to digest what we have already done." The younger Lim nonetheless pointed to a further internationalization of the group's operations in the future. Yet the company's hospitality and leisure component, including its iconic Genting Highlands resort complex, appeared certain to remain its largest and most emblematic division into the new century.
