Genting Group-- Company Strategies Abroad

The Genting Group began expanding its operations in the late 80s and early 90s. Its first major expansion was in 1993 when the company launched Star Cruises (which operates in throughout the Asia-Pacific region). In 1996, they entered the oil and gas market in Indonesia, and in 2003, they opened a power plant in India. Today, they also own resorts and casinos throughout the world, as well as Genting International, PLC, an international investment holding company.

The company began its international operations after a major restructuring in 1989. It became a holdings company, and opened divisions abroad. Over the past two decades, Genting’s strategy has been to take its strong international reputation and use it to successfully increase its international presence. Today, most of their operations remain in Southeast Asia, but they also operate in the UK and with an online gambling site.

According to The Star (Malaysia’s largest newspaper), Lim Kok Thay (Chairman) stated: "My father's advice to me is to hold the group steady as she goes, rather than to rush headlong into any wild expansion programme. That's my intention too as we need to digest what we have already done." The younger Lim nonetheless pointed to a further internationalization of the group's operations in the future. Yet the company's hospitality and leisure component, including its iconic Genting Highlands resort complex, appeared certain to remain its largest and most emblematic division into the new century.

Genting Group and Reflection of Home Country Culture

Their website has a very good story about how they have always been deeply involved in the malaysian culture with their business. Here is the link to the website.
http://www.genting.com/history/index.htm
The website talks about genting Group growing throughout its existence from strength to strength. I think this means that when they do something, they want to make it another one of their specialities. Their first hotel was finished and opened in 1971. Even today, They make their number one priorty as ensuring the natural beauty of the rain forest surrounding are preserved. Now at the original location, they have expanded to have five hotels and two apartment blocks. They are also sporting a golf resort. When you combine all of this you get what is called Genting Highlands Resort. It is known as the "City of Entertainment" in Malaysia.
Genting Group has also added the fastest cable car system in the world in 1997. They have also entered the oil and gas exploration industry.
Here is a good quote from the founder that passed away in 2007.
"Once the goals have been clearly defined, with the greatest amount of determination and hard work, one can conclusively realise one's goals."
- Tan Sri Lim Goh Tong, Founder
I think that Genting Group is a great example at reflecting home country culture. they are greatly supported from the Malays. and they have expanded worldwide into countries such as America and the United Kingdom. Genting group also does a great deal of work reguarding corporate social responsibility. The website is http://www.genting.com/community/index.htm

Incentives

Expatriates working in regional offices are taxed only on the portion of their chargeable income attributable to the number of days that they are in Malaysia.

The Malaysia Governement has initiated the Malaysia My Second Home Program that provides incentives for expatriates to own their own property in the country. Some of these include tax exemptions and allowances.

To help reduce the cost of doing business in Malaysia, expenses incurred on audit fees by companies are deemed as allowable expenses for deduction in the computation of income tax.

Last, companies that establish a training institution are eligible for an investment tax allowance for 10 years.
